Most "watermark removers" are inpainting tools. They throw away the watermarked region and ask a model to hallucinate something plausible in its place. That works acceptably on flat backgrounds and badly on everything else — you get a soft, smeared patch exactly where the viewer's eye is drawn.
The Gemini watermark does not need that treatment. It is composited onto the finished image with a known glyph, at a known corner, at a known size, with a known per-pixel opacity. In other words the output pixel is result = original × (1 − α) + watermark × α. Every term in that equation is recoverable except the original — so the original is what the tool solves for.
The practical work is in detection rather than the arithmetic: finding which watermark variant and scale was used, locating it to the pixel, and confirming a match confidently enough to act. The engine carries an embedded set of alpha maps for the sizes Gemini ships, scores candidate positions, runs multiple passes for images that were watermarked more than once, and reconstructs the underlying pixels only when the evidence is strong. When it is not confident, it leaves your file alone rather than damaging it.
One thing worth being clear about: this removes the visible watermark only. Google also embeds SynthID, an invisible statistical signature, into Gemini images. This tool does not touch it and makes no attempt to, so the image remains detectable as AI-generated by anyone checking for it.
Pixels are reconstructed from the blend equation, so detail and texture under the watermark survive intact.
